The day got off to a little later of a start than planned (because there wasn’t much of a plan). We wanted to check out the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Fine Arts. I wanted to run. So the rest of the crew drove to the Palace and I went for a run through the city. If I lived and trained in San Fran I would be a hill master. So since I don’t, these hills kicked my ass. I got a little lost, which added in an extra hill, no big deal. I ended up where I needed to be though. The Palace was pretty cool and it was from a scene in the Rock, so that was neat. We then walked along the beach and saw the Golden Gate Bridge from a distance. There were a ton of sailboats out on the bay, and it turned out to be some sort of International Sailing Race. That was pretty cool, even though I know nothing about sailing. We then headed back to the hotel and got a mediocre brunch at an Irish place around the corner. Then it was time to pack up and see the Phillies take on the Giants at AT&T Park.
I had been looking forward to this for quite a while. Once we got there, I wasn’t immediately impressed with the stadium. We were walking through the stadium for over 5 minutes without seeing the field. Even once we got to the main concourse area, there were a ton of shops blocking the view of the field. Not a fan. We got to our seats in the upper level, and as expected, got some heckling. It didn’t really bother me that much because I knew how much worse they would get it in Philly. The seats were pretty good, but the game wasn’t great. We had Lincecum against Oswalt. Lincecum pitched lights out and Oswalt gave up 12 hits, but only 3 runs. The Phils had taken the previous 3 games in the series, so I wasn’t too upset when “The Beard” closed out the game (other than I hate The Beard.) Oh well, you win some and you lose some. We’ll see what happens if we meet up in the playoffs this year.
From there it was time to hit the road for Mendocino, and say goodbye to JJ. He was sad to leave, and we were sad to see him go. He was a constant energy source for most of the trip and I tip my hat to him (yes JJ, my goofy hiking hat). Can’t wait to see what silly adventure we have together next.
The drive up to Mendocino was pretty. We got to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and drive through the wine country. The roads were very windy, but it just made it interesting. We then got to the PCH and it was different than the southern section. It did not hug the coast as much, and the marine layer was back…lame. We did get to see some glimpses of the shoreline and it was very pretty with large rocks off the coast. We then got to the sleepy town of Mendocino. I chose this place as our stopover mostly for Mom because it seemed like a “Southampton”-type of town. I guess we just didn’t catch it at the right time. It was cold, cloudy and there was nothing going on anywhere. It felt like the Jersey shore in the winter. The B&B we stayed at was way over-priced at we couldn’t eat at the Pub because Nick was 21. So we ended up at the Mendocino Hotel, but the dinner was really good so that changed our spirits a little bit. We then headed back to the rooms and fell asleep pretty quickly. Phils couldn’t pull off the win, but still a pretty good game to watch. ULTRA day 15/39: COMPLETE
