Start to a New Adventure

Life is full of adventures, no matter how big or small. I go through small adventures everyday at school and every single one is a learning process. Some of them beat you up, and some of them are very uplifting, it all depends on your perception of it. My perception of this adventure I'm starting is, "Shit, what did I get myself into?" But I'm taking the plunge. I've done my research, I passed my boards (!!!), I've got my brother next to me and a car-full of crap. I'm good to go.

So first day wasn't too bad. Woke up and packed the car, and I can tell you that it is going to be a tight squeeze once Scott and Steve join in. But we'll cross that river when we get there (pun is intended.) The first 30-45 minutes of the drive felt like nothing special because it felt like I was just driving down to Wilmington/Newark. Once we got onto I-70 and saw the sign that read "DENVER 1800 mi" and that's when it really sunk in. The rest of the drive was not bad at all. We drove through Frederick, MD, home to our Las Vegas host, Liz, and our official gossiper, Tori. Not actually a gossiper, but she brings me up to speed on everything I've missed while I'm gone. Driving down I-81 was a good first day route, we got to see a good portion of the Shenandoah Valley. Once we got off 81 and headed west on I-65, we were driving through George Washington National Forest and there was not a car in sight. We finally got to Douthat State Park, our home for the night. We were camping right along a lake surrounded my mountains, a very nice first site. Within 5 minutes of getting there it started to rain. I went through 5 weeks of driving the first trip without 1 drop of rain; to me rain is unacceptable. We decided to just through on our rainshells and check out the trails. We did a short 1.5 mile hike just while the rain let up and we got some pretty cool pics of the lake and set up camp for the night. We tried the Mountain House Wraps dehydrated meal for dinner, and it was pretty good. I think we added a little too much water, so it was pretty messy to eat, but tasted pretty good. After that we ended our first ULTRA day to best way possible, and then headed to sleep. ULTRA life day 1/39: COMPLETE.
